A family who lived off the proceeds of begging for several years can now sleep easily after securing help from the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation.

Chris Kumar, 27, and his wife and their six children lived in despair and desperation. The mother once begged on the streets to earn money for the family.

This came to an end when minister Rosy Akbar visited the family.

“The couple named Chris Kumar and Siren Prasad approached the ministry for assistance in addressing some of the challenges they faced. Now the family is assisted through the ministry’s Poverty Benefit Scheme where they receive the maximum assistance of $160, which is inclusive of the monthly food voucher,” Ms Akbar said.

To help the family the minister liaised with HART Home in Nausori to reserve a place for them to live in.

“Helping this family through employment opportunity will improve their living status. The ministry will continue to monitor their progress and help them get a new start in their lives,” Ms Akbar said.

“The welfare of these children is of great importance to the ministry, the very reason we have come this far to ensure that the wellbeing and welfare of these children is not compromised under any circumstances.”
