Swami Vivekananda College of Malolo in Nadi has taken up the challenge to produce more natural resources to mark World Environment Week.

They plan to do this by planting of vegetables, using compost materials, separating garbage and planting flowers.

School Teacher for Agriculture Science and Basic Science Roshlin Prasad it was an important week, which are full of activities.

“In conjunction with the environment committee and the 3R committee we are looking after the environment week,” she said.

“We are focussing on the younger generations because we have to save the resources for the future. Involving students allow them to be aware of what is happening to save our environment since we have a lot of environmental issues.

“We are doing gardening to raise issues on the need for healthier green environment so they can engage in home backyard gardening. We are also looking at composting so that they learn not to depend on the fertilizers but recycle composing materials.”

Ms Prasad said the students have used this initiative with available resources by planting in empty tins and containers that left unused.
