About 500 trees will be planted today at the Lautoka Botanical Garden to mark World Environment Day.

This is a partnership between Reforest Fiji, Fiji National University (FNU), Pacific Islands Rainforest Foundation, European Union, Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) and Lautoka City Council.

The FNU’s assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Science, Ajantha Perera, said the theme of the event was ‘Plant a tree- reduce the heat- create a greener city.’

“Each person who plants a tree will be given a plaque with their name carved to be placed beside the tree. The event starts from 9am – 5pm,” Ms Perera said.

On the same note, Nadi-based T.A Learning Centre and Professional Tuition Services will be celebrating World Environment Day and World Oceans Day today.

Centre administration manager Taniela Tuitavua said the school was associated with Mamanuca Environment Society (MES).

“To mark this special and a very important day, the school with the MES officer with be having a clean-up campaign at Wailoaloa Beach,” Mr Tuitavua said.

“MES have been working with the school for three years now and they have classes with the school every Thursday educating the children on environment sustainability and the sea.

“We need a good way to advocate the sustainability of the environment and the ocean.”

He said the school would begin cleaning the beach, picking up rubbish and making compost.

The programme is sponsored by Goodman Fielder and will be from 9.30am – 1pm.
