Association Helps Labasa Farmers

The Labasa Cane Producers Association has assisted more than 3380 farmers from the Labasa and Seaqaqa sectors with cane cutting equipment.

Association acting executive manager Ravneel Raj said it was a timely pre-harvest subsidy assistance to get farmers ready for the crushing season on June 17.

The farmers get the assistance depending on the sugarcane they produce in the previous season per 100 tonnes.

For every 100 tonnes of sugarcane a farmer receives a cane knife and file steel. For those who produce 200 tonnes, two of the said will be given.

How it works?

But Mr Raj said even those who do not produce 100 tons get the assistance.

“Now the plan is where we decide what kind of projects we can offer or assistance we can offer for the cane growers however the budget we are receiving is quite less,” Mr Raj said.

“We started distributing in mid May and a few more to go because it’s always good to distribute these materials before the crushing season commences.

“We call it pre-harvest subsidy assistance which means we are trying to get farmers ready for the crushing season.

“If some growers might not get enough knives and files because their tonnage has been low at least they now know how much extra materials they need to buy apart from the assistance.”

There are 7189 cane knives and filing steel up for distribution this season.
