The Fijian Government has stressed its commitment to ensure improved living standards for market vendors through the improvement of market facilities and women’s accommodation.

The assurance came from Assistant Minister for Local Government Lorna Eden while officiating at the completion of a two-day course for 120 market vendors at the Lautoka Shopping Mall titled “Market for Change Training Programme”.

The Australian-funded project in conjunction with the Fijian Government conducted by the UN Women was a great success for the market vendors, who received certificates after the course.

“This market for change project aims to promote gender equality and social and economic empowerment of market vendors with specific attention to the needs and aspirations of women market vendors,” Mrs Eden said.

“These aspirations focus on economic security, the strengthening of local government institution, procedures and development approach and the design and building of gender responsive infrastructure.”

Australian High Commission to Fiji and Tuvalu, Development Co-operation Counsellor Joanne Choe was pleased to see women move forward.

“We are committed to supporting to safer, cleaner and more inclusive markets for vendors and customers,” she said.

UN Women Deputy Representative Nicolas Burniat said the programme and the day was all about the vendors.

Lautoka City Council Chief Executive Officer Jone Nakauvadra thanked the two organisations for their financial support.
