A gathering in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, has been told that countries whose leaders are free from corruption are the ones who develop quickly and prosper.

The word has come from the Governor of Jakarta, Basuki Tjahja Purnama (popularly known as Governor Ahok), a man known for his uncompromising leadership.

Governor Ahok was giving a briefing to Pacific journalists visiting Indonesia.

He said the most important lesson was not to accept bribery.

“Don’t be corrupted. As long as you bring justice and live up to the expectations of the people. Make them happy, give them education, give them happiness make their stomach full and make their wallet full,” Governor Ahok said.

He talked about some of the challenges he faced, including dealing with Indonesia’s violent history.

“Jakarta is challenging city to govern, but I am committed to fight corruption; under my leadership Jakarta is now moving towards a promising direction,” Governor Ahok said.

“We have to complete reforms, improve government transparency, public services and facilities.”

Indonesian democracy marked a milestone when Governor Ahok, who is ethnic Chinese and a Christian, was appointed Governor of Jakarta.

Governor Ahok succeeded Joko Widodo, who is now the President of Indonesia.
