Strong warning on traffic infringements has been issued.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Police are issuing a strong warning against drivers using illegal fittings such as tints and extra lights.

Authority chief executive officer Naisa Tuinaceva and Police director traffic Senior Superintendent of Police Mahesh Mishra made a joint statement during a press conference in Valelevu on Wednesday.

The two organisations have launched a joint operation to monitor and address traffic problems, especially driver behaviour on our roads.

SSP Mishra said there were a lot of public service vehichle and private vehichle with illegal fittings and extra lights.

“This is one of our major concerns that we will address in our joint operation with municipalities and the LTA,” SSP Mishra said.

He said they would also stop any Government vehicle found to have illegal fittings and extra lights.

We are concerned about this because some taxis and private vehicles that have tints have been used for robberies and other offences.

“These need to be taken seriously when we talk about law enforcement. We will pull up all vehicles including Government vehicles, so we will set a standard in our enforcement,” he said.

SSP Mishra said they would also address the issue of abuse and misuse of emergency lights by Government.

“For other private and PSV vehicles, extra lights fitted on number plates, dashboard and the hood of the car, near the rear view mirror, etc are not allowed,” SSP Mishra said.

Mr Tuinaceva said a short-term solution was having operations and roadside compliance checks and the long-term solution was to liaise with the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority to curb the importation of these motor vehicle accessories.
