PM Leads Delegation To MSG Talks In Honiara

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama will lead a Fijian delegation to the Melanesian Spearhead Group summit in the Solomon Islands next week.

The MSG meeting starts on Thursday.

Mr Bainimarama will also lead a high-level Fijian delegation in a political dialogue with the European Union early on Monday in Parliament.

The Fijian delegation to Monday morning’s meeting includes Minister for Foreign Affairs Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Kaiyum, Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Rosy Akbar, Acting Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs Esala Nayasi and Deputy Secretary Policy for Foreign Affairs Luke Daunivalu.

For the EU the Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs will lead the European delegation and will be made up of Andrew Jacobs, Head of Delegation of the European Union for the Pacific, Noora Häyrinen, Fiji Desk Officer, European External Action Service, Eduards Stiprais, Under-Secretary of State – Political Director, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Gediminas Varanavičius, Head of Political and Trade Section, Delegation of the European Union for the Pacific Ivita Burmistre, Acting Director, Economic Relations, Trade and Development Co-operation Directorate, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Renato Mele, Head of Co-operation, Delegation of the European Union for the Pacific and  Rebecca von Schreeb, Attachée,  Political and Trade Section, Delegation of the European Union for the Pacific Representatives from France, Germany and the United Kingdom will observe.

At a press conference yesterday at the EU office at Level 6 TappooCity, Mr  Jacobs said discussions would centre on development co-operation programmes and other matters raised by Fiji and likewise the EU.

After the meeting, the Prime Minister will open the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly at the Grand Pacific Hotel.

The opening will be after traditional ceremonies of welcome for delegates from 10am.

Traditional welcome ceremonies will be performed by the staff of the iTaukei Affairs Board and the yaqona ceremony by the people of Rewasau Village, Naitasiri.
