Two people had a lucky escape after the truck they were travelling in tumbled at Malolo outside Nadi yesterday morning.

The seven-tonne freezer truck belonged to Shop N Save Supermarket and was driven by a 29-year-old with a lorry boy as a passenger. It was heading towards Lautoka from Suva.

Police divisional traffic officer West Assistant Superintendent Mitieli Divuana confirmed the incident.

He said the two were rushed to the Nadi Hospital, treated for minor bruises and sent home.

“Luckily there was no casualty. The truck veered off the road and plunged into the drain, resulting in it falling on its side,” ASP Divuana said.

“The incident happened at 8.15am. We are yet to find out the reason because we are still carrying out investigations, but it was a truck fully loaded.”

The Fiji Police Force is advising parents and members of the community to take heed because the cane crushing season is around the corner and roads in the Western Division will be full of cane-laden trucks headed for the sugar mills at Lautoka and Ba.

“We are happy about that this year and we will improve in the Western Division and the crushing season that is coming up next month,” ASP Divuana said.

“We are hoping that parents and members of the community will work together with the Police and the LTA in keeping our fatality numbers down.”
