Batinisavu Uluiyata has pulled out of the Team Fiji for the Pacific Games in Port Moresby next month.

Shop N Save Athletics Fiji president Joseph Rodan (Senior) confirms the Natabua High School middle distance runner has secured a rugby contract in France.

“Batinisavu has decided to pull out of the athletics squad,” Rodan said.

“From my understanding he has signed a contract with a club in France and I think he will depart next month.

“It is sad to lose him, but he has made up his mind that he’s going, good luck to him.”

Rodan said former Marist Brothers High School long distance runner Ratutira Narara was a capable replacement.

“We’ve Narara who ran the 400m in 48.2sec and he beat Batinisavu and we are hoping he will do a 47.2sec.

“He has done it before and he will come and prove himself.

“He was in the reserve list and we have brought him to be part of the travelling team.”

Rodan strongly believes in marketing the sport more.

“We have to market athletics unfortunately in this case we didn’t market enough like in Batinisavu’s case, rugby has taken over and good luck to him,” he said.

“His got his career, he will probably earn more money in rugby. Only thing we can do is offer our athletes scholarships and hopefully they stay with us.”
