Local Piers Not Deep Enough

The USNS Mercy ship is anchored out at the Savusavu Harbour because water along the local piers in Savusavu are not deep enough.

It is a United States of America hospital ship that supports U.S. military forces and hospital services during disaster or humanitarian relief.

US Navy Lieutenant-Commander Tiffani Walker said: “It is berthed in the harbour because the water alongside the local piers in Savusavu are not deep enough to support the draft of the ship.

“Despite the location of the ship, our planned engagements are still ongoing with transport by water taxi and helicopter.

“The crew and patients are being transported safely by water taxis and tender boats out to the Mercy.

“Patient care is a top priority and all of them are transported with an escort of their choice and personnel from the ship who help ensure their safe arrival onboard.”

As of Thursday afternoon five patients were already transported out to the ship for treatment.

“The crew boarded five patients last night (Thursday) from our surgical screenings in Savusavu,” Lieutenant-Commander Walker.

“To maintain patient confidentiality, we cannot discuss actual diagnoses or surgeries, but that the crew is providing excellent medical care for them.”

From June 14 to 15, medical professionals from the Ministry of Health and the USNS Mercy will host a community health and wellness fair at Ganilau Park from 8am to 4pm.

Pacific Partnership 2015 team is conducting more than 30 community service events within Fiji, including band performances and sporting events.

They are also conducting more than 40 medical events in Fiji, such as surgical screenings, medical surgeries, subject matter expert exchanges and basic life support training.

These events are created to expand the relationship between the United States and Fiji.
