One fish outlet in Suva was still selling kawakawa and donu yesterday, despite a campaign to stop catching them because it is their spawning season.

The owners declined to comment.

SeaWeb Asia Pacific is working with the Ministry of Fisheries and other agencies to support this campaign.

The fishes are really vulnerable as they gather together at predictable sites to give birth annually.

SeaWeb is appealing to the public to stop catching, selling and eating kawakawa and donu during their peak spawning season from June through September.

The 4FJ Campaign is about appealing to the public and private sector and our communities to support the breeding of the two Grouper species.

SeaWeb Executive Director Scott Radway said they were asking for people to give those fishes a chance to release their eggs each year, so “we can have more fish the rest of the year.”

“If we don’t give these fishes a chance, we could face going without them for 12 months a year and not just 4 months,” he said.
