Two school teachers have been charged in relation to alleged disrespectful behaviour in court.

Anu Rekha Sharma, a Suva teacher who faces a count of contempt of court, appeared before Magistrate Charles Ratakele at the Nasinu Magistrates Court yesterday.

On Thursday, Sharma appeared before another Magistrate, Sufia Hamza, in a civil matter where she allegedly showed disrespect to judicial proceedings.

She is charged with pointing towards the magistrate and uttering “why should I show respect to this kind of court?” after she was not happy with the review of her civil case.

Her charges were read out and explained in court yesterday, but no plea was taken.

Police Prosecutor Feroz Khan objected to bail, citing it was a serious matter for a civil servant to disrespect the court of law.

Sharma has been remanded in custody. She has asked to seek Legal Aid assistance and the matter would be called on Monday for a bail ruling.

Magistrate Ratakele said everyone needed to learn a lesson and follow judicial law.

In another case, a school teacher from Nausori, Manhar Kumar, appearing on Wednesday for another matter before Magistrate Hamza, allegedly started taking pictures in court.

When the magistrate questioned him, he denied taking pictures but a police officer confiscated his phone. A picture of the court room was seen in his mobile phone. He was charged with contempt of court.

He appeared before Magistrate Charles Ratakele on Thursday.

He was granted bail in the sum of $1000, with his father, who is also a teacher, as a surety. No plea was taken.

His case would be called on July 8.
