Fijians Aim For First Win

The Vodafone Fijian national team aim to win their first game of the Four Nations Friendship Cup in Vanuatu today.

The side were held to 1-1 draw against Solomon Islands in their opening match on Saturday and will play their second match against New Caledonia at the Port Vila National Stadium.

Despite the draw, assistant coach Imdad Ali said his players played well and were looking forward to a tough game against New Caledonia.

“We missed a penalty kick and we need to improve on our finishing,” he said.

“I am happy with how the boys performed. We are trying to adapt to the weather and ground conditions.

With the Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea just weeks away, Ali said the tournament was a good way to test their young squad.

“This is a perfect build up for us because we have a chance to gauge the players,” Ali said.

“The current players we have in the national team have already gone through the development stages so we want to see what our U23 reps can offer to us.

“Experience and exposure are the main factors we want to achieve from this competition.

“This is a great opportunity and pathway created for our young players and it is one that they are taking full advantage of.”

The Fijians play New Caledonia at 3pm today.
