Minister Tells Of Great Potential

The Fijian Tourism expo is one way to showcase the local and international flair of the Fijian tourism sector.

The event will open tomorrow at the Sheraton Fiji Resort Events Centre.

Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism Faiyaz Siddiq Koya said there would be a lot of great potential discovered during the expo.

He said it should not be missed by those who are involved in the industry.

“I’m looking forward to the Fijian tourism expo that will starts on Tuesday. This is where people will set up booths to showcase what they have to offer,” Mr Koya said.

He said the Fijian Government would do its utmost best to ensure that the tourism sector was well facilitated.

“We are looking forward to a great week and for a record number of buyers and sellers who will be here for the week,” Mr Koya said.

Tourism Fiji director of events Sally Cooper said the event had grown to 30 per cent in terms of participation.

“Last year was the first time we did the event here that tourism Fiji hosted. People were probably testing us to see how far we would go, but last year’s event was very successful,” she said.

Ms Cooper said there would be 358 individual exhibitors who would occupy the 121 booths that have been set up and 151 buyers, a majority of which are international.

“The theme for this year is community and tourism and how they are synonymous because we need both to work together,” she said.

“The great attraction for tourists is the Fijian people but we also rely on tourism for the employment of the community to generate revenue.”

With the inaugural hosting of the Fijian expo last year Ms Cooper said most exhibitors went out of their way to personalise the appearance of their booths.

“There will be a prize for the best booth, as a lot of the exhibitors go to a lot of trouble to create a stunning look,” she said.

“We want this exhibition to be of an international standard.”

Meanwhile a delegation will be led by the Minister to present the Sevusevu to the Tui Nadi Ratu Sailosi Dawai at his chiefly village of Narewa to seek the blessing of the event.

The expo begins tomorrow and ends on Thursday (16-18 June).
