Poasa Making His Mark In NZ

Poasa Waqanibau, who hails from Kuku in Tailevu, is enjoying playing club rugby in New Zealand.

Waqanibau, 21, has been a revelation since joining Border RC in Wanganui, New Zealand.

He left for New Zealand on March 31 where two days later, he was in the starting line-up and helped his team defeated Ruapehu, scoring a try and setting up two more.

He was part of the Fijian Under-20 to the Junior World Championship in 2014 in New Zealand, where he was identified by Border RC officials.

He was also a member of the Telecom Fijian Warriors team at the World Rugby Pacific Challenge in Suva earlier this year.

“I was excited when my agent told me that a club in New Zealand wants me to play for them, I was a bit nervous, especially playing for a different club in a new environment.

“Despite that, I know that this was a big step up for me and I needed to make it count.”

Since then, he has played an influential role for his club, with six wins and just one loss to table leaders Pirates in the Wanganui Premium.

His impressive form caught the eyes of many coaches, including former All Blacks captain Murray Mexted, in the Wanganui region and was selected for trial for the upcoming Heartland Championship.

“Being selected for the trial was a big achievement for me. I want to grow as a rugby player while I still have the chance to,” he said.

“I aim to play in Super Rugby, especially for the Crusaders.”
