Bainimarama Rallies Assembly In Climate Change Fight

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has called on Small Island Developing States to back Fiji in the climate change battle.

He said as a global community of nations, they could not allow their industrialised members – who were the principal carbon emitters – to carry on.

He was speaking at the opening of the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly in Suva yesterday.

Describing the carbon emitters as the “coalition of the selfish,” he said they continued to put their own economic interests and the jobs of their own people first before the wellbeing and survival of Small Island Developing States.

He urged representatives of every Small Island Developing State to return to their capitals determined to place their concerns about this issue at the forefront of their own national debates and the formulation of their own national policies. “We need your support because time is rapidly running out.”

He thanked the countries of the European Union for facing up to that moral challenge and taking a lead on climate change. The EU, he said, had committed itself to reducing carbon emissions by 40 per cent by 2030.

In contrast to some of their bigger neighbours in the Pacific, he said EU was proving to be a development partner in the true sense of the word.
