The European Union has praised Fijian reforms following last year’s general elections.

EU’s representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Edgars Rinkevics, also the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, spoke highly of the reforms in Suva yesterday after a Fiji-EU meeting.

It was the first high-level political dialogue between Fiji and the EU under the EU-ACP partnership (Cotonou) Agreement since Fiji’s return to democracy.

Mr Rinkevics said: “Fiji has carried out remarkable reforms since its return to democracy.”

He said: “The Parliament is up and running, and has already addressed many important issues for Fiji, some of which have been positively noted in the international context.”

He cited as examples the decision to ratify the United Nations Convention Against Torture (UNCAT) and to abolish the last provisions on death penalty.

“In addition, Fiji has a number of women in key positions both in the Parliament and in the Government, which may serve as an example and inspiration to the whole Pacific region.”

He said the EU had also encouraged an inclusive regional co-operation especially in the areas of common challenges such as climate change, migration and fisheries.

The discussions covered political and economic developments in Fiji and the EU as well as key strategic topics of mutual interest for both sides.

The meeting was chaired on the Fijian side by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, and on the EU side by Mr Rinkevics. Among the outcomes was an agreement by the parties to seek common lines to tackle key international challenges such as climate change and responses to international crises.
