Investment And Trade Potential In The Marshalls

There are plans to facilitate and bridge the gap on trade and investment between the North and South Pacific.

This was on top of the agenda when the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) met with the Marshall Islands Office of Commerce and Investment (MICI) trade delegation yesterday.

Leading the Marshall islands delegation was former Investment Fiji chief executive officer, Ravuni Uluilakeba.

Discussions centered around the existence of the huge potential for trade and business partnership between Pacific island nations and local towns.

NCCI secretary Shalendra Prasad said, “Fiji being the hub of the South Pacific and Nadi being the first impression of Fiji, makes the chamber an integral part of economic development in the region.”

Objecitives

Mr Uluilakeba said the main agenda and key objectives of the proposed Trade/Investment forum are three fold.

This includes general exploration and fact finding, key business sector exploration and match making. Third is possible MOU establishments.

“This will allow us to effectively market and promote the investment opportunities from the Marshall islands.” he said.

The event is sponsored by Pacific Islands Private Sector Organisation (PIPSO) and is co-sponsored by RC Manubhai, Fiji Export Council, and Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), GeoScience Division – SOPAC, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Joe’s Farm.

The special trade delegation will also convene a similar meeting with the Suva Chamber at the Tanoa Plaza today.

Mr Prasad added: “The turn-out was very impressive and apparently Fijian business houses have great opportunity to set-up business in RMI to enjoy various incentives and direct access into the US market and more.”
