New Crossing Opens This Week

Residents of Nakama, Sarava, Waiqele and Naduna will soon enjoy walk or drive over the newly-built Nakama Irish crossing.

Work on the $1.13million project is now complete and is expected to open this week to traffic.

Residents in the area had problems with crossing the river after the old bridge, which linked the settlements, was damaged by floodwaters last year.

“The new crossing will not only bring smile to the residents but to school children as well,” Nakama Village headwoman Sera Matai said.

“The old bridge was always prone to flooding and with the new crossing we do not have to worry about taking children to school during bad weather.”

Sugarcane farmer Ame Qareqare said: “With the mill opening this week, the crossing will really benefit most farmers who are transporting their cane to the mill.”

He said this was a gift to most farmers and he thanked the present Government and Fiji Roads Authority for the new crossing.
