Our Reps Draw

The Vodafone Fijian National team drew 1-1 with New Caledonia in their second match of the Four Nations Friendship Cup tournament in Port Vila, Vanuatu, yesterday.

Coach Carlos Buzzetti was proud of the performance of the players.

“It is disappointing we drew but I am very happy with the way the boys played,” Buzzetti said.

“It was a very tense and physical game. After a 1-1 draw against Solomon Islands last Saturday, I think it was a bit too much for the players.

“The ground conditions did not help and the intensity in those conditions did a fair amount of damage on our squad.

“We have quite a number of injuries, some of the boys are limping but nonetheless, I am proud and I think if the people back home watched their performance, they would be proud as well.

“We have our next game against Vanuatu on Wednesday and it will be tough. I know these boys will give it 100 per cent.”

Buzetti said the team was on the right track once the Vodafone Fijian U20 players join the team.

“Seven players from the U20 squad will join the team. We’ve not had a lot of time to train together ahead of the Pacific Games, but after what the boys have the potential.”

Fiji took the lead in the 20th minute with a goal from Christopher Wasasala.

But Wasasala was awarded his second yellow card in the second-half leaving the Fiji team with only 10 men.

New Caledonia took advantage as captain Jean Brice Wadraiako scored before fulltime..

Vanuatu leads the points standing with four points, Fiji on two points, Solomon Islands have two and New Caledonia with one.

Fiji play Vanuatu tomorrow at 4pm.
