PM, Speaker To Get European Invitation

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and Speaker to Parliament Jiko Luveni will be invited next year to visit the European Parliament.

Louis Michel, co-president of the 29th Session of the ACP-EU-Joint Parliamentary Assembly said this at a press conference at the Grand Pacific Hotel yesterday.

Mr Michel said Fiji stepped in at short notice to host the meeting after Vanuatu pulled out because it was badly affected by Cyclone Pam.

“I would like to thank the Prime Minister for hosting this meeting,” he said.

He said they had been welcomed by a very honourable ceremony.

“We were all impressed by that.”

“I would like him (PM) to address the European Parliament as recognition for his contribution to Fiji’s return to true democracy.”

He said he would also like to invite the chair woman of the assembly.

Fiji, he said, had come forward to support Vanuatu.

He said it represented a high level of solidarity for member states in the Pacific.

This he said would not go unnoticed.

Another co-president Fitz A Jackson, MP (Jamaica) said he thanked Fiji for having offered to host these meetings at short notice.

“We are therefore grateful that the decision of Fiji has ensured that we are still able to meet in the Pacific,” he said.

He said he was convinced that it was worth coming to Fiji to see not only the beauty of the country, but the resilience, determination and friendliness of its people, and the richness of its culture.
