Investment Fiji has indicated that employing a Trade Commissioner for Papua New Guinea has been tough given the criteria that the successful candidate should fulfil.

Chief executive Godo Muller-Teut said the appointment would come from Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism.

Mr Muller-Teut  envisaged that within the next month or so, hopefully this third round will come to a conclusion.

He said this during the Fiji-PNG Business Council networking session last night at Holiday Inn Suva.

“The selection process is ongoing. Unfortunately we cannot reveal anything yet,” he said.

“The panel makes a recommendation, the candidate has to accept a recommendation.

“We will hopefully have an answer as to whether or not we will have a trade commissioner within the next month or so,” he added.

“It’s been a hard process. It’s not easy it’s a job that requires experience, a candidate who can really go out there and sell Fij and stamp business environment in PNG.

“Build the connections and boost our exports to Papua New Guinea and identify potential investors for Fiji.”

The Fiji-PNG Business Council has just registered eight new members as of last night bringing the membership to about 90.

This makes it the biggest business council in Fiji, according to president Nouzab Fareed.

“There’s lots of room to grow. There’s very high disposable income among expatriates and the middle income in PNG,” he said.

“The Trade Commissioners plays a crucial role. The successful candidate must know about Fiji and also to understand PNG.

“The candidate can’t be a stranger there. So finding a Fijian citizen who knows both and who is available is rare.

“We need a trade commissioner to enlighten Fiji in PNG.”

The guest speaker was Mahesh Patel, the chairman of the City Pharmacy Group and Telikom PNG.

Mr Patel is a Fijian-born businessman suceeding in business in PNG. He presented to members on doing business in and with PNG.
