EU Presence Reinforces Suva As Regional Hub, Says Bainimarama

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says the European Union’s continuing presence in Fiji reinforces the importance of Suva as a regional hub.

He said this while opening the new office of the Delegation of the European Union (EU) for the Pacific in Suva.

He said Fiji greatly valued its longstanding relations with the EU, dating back to 1975 with the establishment of Fiji’s diplomatic mission in Brussels.

“We’re delighted as a nation to host the EU’s Pacific base in Suva, and this new office in the TappooCity Complex reinforces the strength of that relationship,” Mr Bainimarama said.

The EU, he said, had been a key development partner of the Pacific Island nations.

The European Commissioner for International Co-operation and Development, Neven Mimica, said he was delighted to see an upscale office with modern architectural design right in the very heart of Suva

He said as this was his first visit to the Pacific and was impressed to see that Suva was a vibrant regional hub with large modern buildings like the TappooCity to add to its skyline.

With its recent return to democracy, Fiji, he said had strengthened its role in the region and on the international scene.

“I would like to congratulate all the people of Fiji on this achievement.”

He said over the past year, the EU and Fiji had turned a new page in our partnership and had rejuvenated their relations.
