The Caritas Multi-Purpose Hall was handed over to the Games Organising Committee in Port Moresby on Thursday.
The Caritas Hall, which accommodates 1100 people, will be the venue for bodybuilding, table tennis and boxing during the Pacific Games which starts on July 4.
“One of the symbolic things for the committee is how we partner with the local communities to deliver the Games,”GOC chairperson Emma Waiwai said.
‘Caritas is one of the last venues we had on our list and I am very impressed with it. And I know that every athlete who takes part in the three sports will be very happy with the venue.”
Pastoral Care Committee
A Pastoral Care Committee has been put in place to provide spiritual care and counselling services for visiting athletes and officials during the 2015 Pacific Games next month.
The PCC will have pastors from different Christian denominations and ministries available to pray, handle and assist with the spiritual needs of all visitors at the Games.
Games Organising Committee chairperson Emma Waiwai said spiritual life and prayer was part of the Pacific way of life.
“It is important we recognise and acknowledge that these services will be needed during the Games,” Waiwai said.
The chairman of PNG Council of Churches and Anglican Bishop of Port Moresby Denny Bray Guka said this was yet another great occasion for churches to work together.
“With people of different cultures, languages and perhaps different faiths coming from many countries, we have a golden opportunity to unite as a Christian country to work not just as one country, one people and one nation but also of one faith, that is the Christian faith,” said Bishop Guka.
