Cricket Fiji yesterday received $200,000 to help in the development of the sport.

Cricket Fiji chairman Gaurang Patel made a personal donation to help fund development costs and equipment for the next 10 years.

Cricket Fiji general manager Inoke Lesuma said equipment was one of their biggest problems in developing the sport.

“This is a massive sponsorship, equipment is one of the few things that most people don’t take up cricket,” Lesuma said.

“Cricket equipments are expensive, the bat alone costs around $US500-$US1000 ($FD1037-$FD2074) then you have protective gears like helmets, pads and footwear as well.

“A sport cannot develop without the proper facilities and equipment. This will allow us to boost the development of cricket.”

Patel said they hoped to attract new associations.

“This will provide great opportunities to join associations like Lautoka and Nadi.” Fiji National Sports Commission chairman Peter Mazey welcomed the assistance.

“We can’t supply all the funds, so we rely on sponsorships,” Mazey said.
