The Fiji National Sports Commission donated $23,000 to Special Olympics Fiji yesterday.

The donation is for the travel expenses for six athletes and the three officials who will participate at the Special Olympic World Games in Los Angeles on July 25-August 2.

Commission chairman Peter Mazey handed the tickets to the participants at the Suva Special School in Suva yesterday.

The nine-member team will be joined by 7000 athletes, 3000 coaches representing 177 countries along with 30,000 volunteers and an anticipated 500,000 spectators in Los Angeles.

“This is the first time we are having these six athletes for the Special Olympic World Games,.

“And we are so proud to have Fiji National Sports Commission coming on board to sponsor this tour,” Special Olympic Fiji president Bishwa Sidal said.

“We are so thankful to Fiji Airways for making special discounts for this trip allowing Fiji Sports Commission to pay airfares. We are so fortunate and count ourselves lucky.

“These kids are special and haven’t experienced riding on a airplane before. This sponsorship is rewarding.”

Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports Iliesa Delana encouraged the athletes.
