Big Turnout Expected Friday

The 2015 Olympic Day Fun Run will be held in conjunction with the National Sports Holiday on Friday
Olympic Day organising committee member Lyndall Fisher is confident of a good turnout.
“We normally have our Olympic Day on a Saturday but we have decided to have it together with the first National Sports Holiday,” Fisher said. Olympic Day is held worldwide to celebrate the formation of the International Olympic Committee movement, so it is a very special day for every National Olympic Committee around the world.
“This is our way of acknowledging the start of the Olympic Movement and to also promote healthy living, so participants can come out and take part in the run. If you can’t run, you can walk and bring your whole family and it is befitting that we are having it on the same day as the National Sports Holiday.”
Fisher said the Olympic Day and Nationals Sports Holiday was a good way for sporting federations to showcase their individual sports.
“We have invited our national federations and sporting people to come and showcase their sports,” she said.
“There will be several sports that will be showcased where the public can try out, it’s a good way to engage the public in sports they have always wanted to try or not heard before.
“Though we are still finalising which sports will be showcased, other sporting bodies have stepped forward like Sailing Federation and also golf who are interested in promoting their sport.
“We are also looking forward to all the government departments to come along because it is a government public holiday and we are expecting more people to turn up.”
The Olympic Day Fun Run will start at 7am from My Suva Park to the Suva Bowling Club. In Nadi it will start and end at McDonald’s.
There will be six categories including primary school, secondary school, team (four per team), Open individual, masters individual (over 50) and Persons with Disability.
