Co-ordination Vital In Corruption War: FICAC

Co-ordination of all relevant agencies is the main challenge when it comes to fighting corruption.

Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption (FICAC) Investigations Manager, Niko Bukarau said this yesterday.

He said yesterday was the first time for the Auditor General’s (AG’s) Office, Finance Ministry and the Commission to meet.

He made these remarks while addressing the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) regarding the consolidated report on the AG’s report from year 2007 to 2009.

Recommendation 2 by PAC in the AG’s report stated the need for a formal agreement between FICAC and the Auditor General’s office to ensure cases of fraud were followed up. This avoid them surfacing years later before the parliamentary committee responsible.

Mr Bukarau said there were talks in 2010 of having a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). But it was still to be finalised.

Mr Bukarau added that PAC’s recommendation to FICAC to initiate a system to prioritise issues raised by the Auditor General reports 2007 to 2009 had been taken on board with fraud cases to be the commission’s main priority.
