The Minister for Youth and Sports Laisenia Tuitubou has encouraged the people of Fiji to get involved in the inaugural National Sports Holiday today.

He made the comment in response to sceptics who questioned the purpose of the National Sports Holiday.

“We have received negative feedback regarding the holiday with people saying it is a rest day,” Tuitubou said.

“The sports holiday was requested to Cabinet last year and the objective is for everybody to get active,”Tuitubou said.

“Whether it is playing sports of their liking or just basically doing activities around the house or gardens, as long as people get active.

“This holiday is mainly for sports, you do nothing than that will defeat the whole purpose of having a holiday.

“This sports holiday has gone right down to families who have organised activities for everyone to enjoy.”

Tuitubou said that the public was not forced to take part, but he encouraged people to get active because it will benefit them in the future.

“I don’t think most people are well informed or know the meaning of this holiday and that is the kind of mindset that we cannot change,” he said.
