Lal’s Passion For Sun, Print

Upashna Lal, a Year 12 student of Korovuto College in Nadi has a passion for journalism.
In fact, she’s on a creative streak at the moment and decided to show her interests off by designing a dress made from newspaper.
Upashna created a dress made out of Fiji Sun paper formed into a simple bow.
Her proud mother Sashi Lal, was impressed with her daughter’s creation.
“It took her a week to make that costume and we at home have supported her for her interest,” Mrs Lal said.
“She has done a lot of school projects; she learned to make a bow from paper where she then decided to use that idea and create something big.
“It was an awareness day in school and she had no idea what to wear to school at first until she came up with this one.”
Upashna’s passion and dedication to costume making resulted in a beautiful piece of art that caught the eye of many.
Upashna used the materials to inform people that media had a way of creating awareness on issues.
Upashna said: “Fiji Sun is the biggest paper in print media and a good way to create awareness such as on drugs.
“Fiji Sun is readily available to many people around the country and people can learn a lot from reading the paper.
“I have an interest in journalism and therefore this was an idea I obtained to take to my school.”
Upashna participated in a Drug Awareness Day Programme at her school where she marched in her costume on Thursday.
Her message to the public: “Stay aware from drugs, it is within our hard work that you can achieve your goals.”
