Kinisimere Naivalu strongly believes hard work and dedication will help her achieve her goals in the 2015 Pacific Games next month.

This will be the first year for the Yalobi, Waya, Yasawa native to be in Team Fiji swimming team to the Games.

“This is my first Pacific Games. I was scared when my name was announced to be part of the squad,” Naivalu said.

“We have the best team and we know the journey will not be easy, especially having New Caledonia and Papua New Guinea as our toughest opponents. We need to train hard.”

Naivalu, 16, is a Year 11 student at Suva Grammar School.

“I strongly believe in the book of Ephesians 2:8-9 “For by grace you are saved through faith and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God. Not of works lest any man boast.”

“I thank my mother Nina Naivalu, who is also my personal coach. She takes me to the pool every morning and every afternoon.

“My dad and my five siblings supported me in my preparation,” Kinisimere said.

Having maternal links in Lomanikoro, Rewa, her mother said they needed to prepare Kini well.

“I’m her mum and her coach. For Kini, she prepares right from home mentally, physically and spiritually. Her swimming starts in the house,” Nina said.

“She has to eat the right and the best nutrition. Dairy products like milk and butter   is a big no for her because if she doesn’t eat right, she will not swim right. The big challenge for her now is to juggle swimming and studies, especially when she is in her senior year.”

Former South Pacific Games gold medallist and Fiji National University head of sports science, Samuela Yavala has been training Kini.

“Kini is always spiritually motivated and is a person with very few words.

“We also thank 3D Consultants for sponsoring Kini to PNG,” Nina said.
