A driver escaped unhurt after his car went off the road at the Suva-end of the Lami Bridge yesterday morning.

The car went off the road into the dry part of the river bed after the driver claimed to have fallen asleep. He was the only one in the vehicle and was not injured.

A bystander of Suvavou Village Nemai Niudamu said: “I was sitting outside of RB Patel Harbour Point Supermarket when I saw the car going straight over the side and onto the river bed.

“I saw the driver of the vehicle coming out and I took my four- wheel-drive van loaded with vegetables to help him but he refused,” he said.

He said he knew the man had been drinking “by the look of his face and smell of liquor that was coming from him.”

Lami Police Station officer Inosi Veitarogi said: “We were here at 6:20 am and the driver was taken into Police custody for questioning.

“The driver said he fell asleep while he was driving the car.”

Meanwhile Police are still continuing their investigations.
