Qi, 64, Li Boost Young Fijian Team

Caroline Li, Wang Qi will join the Team Fiji table Tennis team on Tuesday.
China-based Li and New Zealand-based Qi, 64 would boost the young table tennis team as they prepare to defy the odds in at the Pacific Games in Port Moresby.
Team manager Julia Koi said Qi, who is oldest member of Team Fiji, was raring for a positive result in PNG.
“Wang Qi is the oldest, experienced and our number one player,” Koi said.
“It will be good having him with these young players who are excited to go and take part.
“They will be joining the team on Tuesday and our young players just can’t wait to meet them because they will bring in a lot of experience.”
The biggest challenge for the new players is to adjust to playing as a team.
“Most of these young players are first timers and are new to this level of competition,” Koi said.
“We are trying to work as a team.
“We went through so many hurdles early this year. Coach Mohammed Gharib left us in March and was replaced by Brett Clarke and the players have to adapt to the new coaching style and techniques,” Koi said.
Table tennis finished fourth at the 2011 Pacific Games in Noumea.
With the inclusion of Qi, Li and students Sally and Grace Yee, Young Jun Park, Phillip Wing the team is confident.
“We are going in there to do our best,” Koi said.
