Agriculture, Tourism Linked To Better Opportunities

The promotion of linkages between agriculture and tourism can contribute towards creating improved economic opportunities.
These were the comments made yesterday by the Head of Operations for the Delegation of the European Union for the Pacific, Renato Mele.
His comments came during the opening of the first ‘Pacific Community Agri-Tourism Week’ held at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa on Denarau Island in Nadi.
Mr Mele said there are over 200 million people unemployed worldwide today as the high birth rate contributes to the slow economic growth.
“The two productive sectors agriculture and tourism seem to offer the best opportunities for inclusive economic growth in the region,” he said.
“Linkages between the two can contribute to improved economic opportunities, build resilience in rural communities and enhance sustainable development in both sectors.
He said the Pacific region feels the impact of climate change more heavily and has the pressing need to generate livelihoods.
Mr Mele said: “Development is about making investment and economic activity work for everyone, while protecting our planet.”
There are 15 countries participating this week. The programme also includes workshops, forums and agri-food displays this week at the resort.
