Jese Equalises For Fiji

The Roy Krishna-captained Vodafone Fijian side played a grand come back to equalise 2-2 against the touring Wellington Phoenix professionals at Govind Park, Ba, last night.

What happened: Krishna and super sub Ilimotama Jese silenced critics after scoring Fiji’s goals in a space of three minutes.

Krishna scored in the 82nd minute while Jese, who came off the bench, scored his in the 85th minute in the torrid encounter.

At half-time the Fijians were down 0-2 to Wellington Phoenix 0-2.

The visitors led after an own goal by Fijian defender, Samuela Kautoka in 13th minute.

Two minutes later Phoenix’s Kwabena Appiah-Kubi increased the lead to 2-0 which remained for almost an hour of the match.

Star turn: Roy Krishna was voted the Man of the Match for his all-rounder effort.

Big play: Munit Krishna and Ilimotama Jese played a grand match.

Comments: Fijian captain Roy Krishna said, “The first match was disappointing for not getting the result, but today (yesterday) the boys dug deeper and we played to the last minute.

“As strikers, it is crucial to score goals. After three years, the boys was able to gel with each other.”

Wellington Phoenix coach Ernest Merrick said, “The Fijian side was better tonight (last night).

“The goalkeeper and his defence were outstanding with last gasp saves.

“In the first-half we scored two early goals, but could have scored the third and Fiji took over in the second-half. Roy, Munit and the midfielders were quick.

“It was a good pre-season for us to play four games in Fiji and we thank Fiji Airways and the national teams. It was good.”
