The Tongan-owned general cargo vessel, MV Niukavai is here for dry dock at the Industrial Marine & Engineering Limited on Walu Bay.

The vessel is represented locally by Carpenters Shipping.

It arrived on Monday and will for the next 15 days or so undergo maintenance as like other vessels of its size, maintenance check and survey.

MV Niukavai was launched by Tonga’s Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala at Faua Wharf on March 14, the past year.

It was formerly known as MV St Theresa, the ship was bought by Tonga’s shipping agency, Friendly Islands Shipping Agency at a cost of NZD$936,000 (about $1.3 million).

It was bought from the Pacific Royale Shipping Group Limited based in Vanuatu through the Tonga’s agent, Jaws Shipping Limited.

The MV Niuvakai has a built in chill freezer and cargo capacity of 660 cubic meters and 274.4 cubic meters with 274,440 litres for bulk cargo diesel fuel.

Survey and maintenance works is expected to be complete on July 14.

The vessel is currently meeting Tonga’s demand from the agricultural sector to give more transportation opportunities to and from the outer islands.
