The Rusiate Matererega- captained Fijian Olympians (Under-23) team lost to the Wellington Phoenix Premiers yesterday prior to their departure to the Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea today.

The side was hammered 3-1 by the New Zealanders during their friendly return match at Govind Park in Ba.

What happened: The side failed to march on from their 2-1 victory over the Kiwis in Suva last Saturday.

It was their final build-up before flying out of the country for Papua New Guinea.

The visitors started their campaign with a lead in the 22nd minute through Ruari Cahill-Fleury after he beat Fijian goalkeeper, Senirusi Bokini.

10 minutes later Max Mata extended the lead.

Halftime: Wellington Phoenix Premiers 2 – 0 Fijian Olympians.

The Premiers continued the fine form when the match resumed – Mata finding the net for his secoind in the 48th.

The Fijians came back firing and pulled one through Napolioni Qasevakatini in the 69th minute.

Star turn: Max Mata was on fire scoring two goals.

Big play: Napolioni Qasevakatini played well.

Comments: Fijian Olympians assistant coach Imdad Ali said: “It was a good match, but I think the boys did not play well. They they are protecting themselves for the Pacific Games which is the bigger picture.”

Wellington Phoenix Premiers coach Andy Hedge said: “We ended on the high note to win the second match. We had a grand start, but the boys did not play well in the second-half as the Fijian came over to score.”
