The Pundit Vishnu Deo Memorial College student expects stiff competition from veteran athletes from around the region.

The Votualevu, Nadi, native’s passion for running started after he got injured playing soccer.

“In 2008 I injured my leg while playing soccer, but I didn’t give up,” Lal said.

“I believe if you want to win, you have to push yourself extra hard.”

“Last year while at Ratu Navula College, I won a bronze medal in the Coca-Cola Games 3000 metres and this year I won gold medal for my school.

“I train daily at 3am. For the Pacific Games, I am expecting tough competition from Tahiti and New Caledonia. My focus is the Commonwealth Games and the World Cross Country.”
