Vodafone Fijian Under-23 footballers set a new world record after thrashing Federated States of Micronesia 38-0 in its second Pool A match in the Pacific Games yesterday.

The win also put them in a perfect position to qualify from its pool for the semifinals.

Fiji Football Association president Rajesh Patel has commended the performance of players.

“It’s a world record and we are proud of their achievement,”Patel said.

“Federated States of Micronesia is coached by an Australian and having this scoreline speaks a lot about the capabilities of this team.

“We have set our sight to qualify for next year’s Olympics and they have what it takes to achieve that goal.

“The majority of the U20 players from the FIFA U20 World Cup are in this team and they can make it to the Olympics,” Patel added.

Fiji U23 side takes over from Australia who set the world record in 2001 with their 31-0 win in the FIFA World Cup qualifying event against American Samoa.

A huge incentive also awaits the U23 players if they qualify for the Olympics.

The Carlos Buzzetti coached side led 21-0 at halftime and in the second-half piled in 17 more goals to win.

Christopher Wasasala netted the opening goal and went on to score six more. U20 rep Antonio Tuivuna netting the highest goal for the side with 10 goals.

The side now sits with four points in Pool A after their 1-1 draw against Vanuatu in their first match.

Fiji plays Tahiti in their last pool match on Tuesday at 2pm and the win will give them a top finish in Pool A.
