Remove the Union Jack

Timoci Gaunavinaka, Nausori

Thank you Mr. Prime Minister for extending the Flag submission time to the end of the year.

Some of us who submitted our design did not read carefully the criteria, which stated that there must be no religious symbol and we apologise for that. (Levu tale neimami totolo calacala)

As for those still insisting that we keep the Union Jack, please get real.

More than 3/4 of the countries in the commonwealth do not have the Union Jack on their flags. South Africa, Jamaica, India, Canada, Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and etc.

What may have happened is that New Zealand copied Australia, we copied New Zealand and the Cook Islands, Niue and Tuvalu copied ours. Apart from these, no other countries I can think of have the Union Jack.We are proud people of a sovereign nation and must not be seen as copy-cats or puppets of the Aussies and Kiwis.

I agree with Poseci Bune’s listing of what the British have done for us. But taking out the Union Jack does not mean we now hate the British or that we try to cut links with them. We will always cherish Britain and what they did for Fiji and that bond can never be broken by any government.

But Fiji must rise to a new dawn of equality, unity and progress. We are a nation of peace-loving people, but are brave enough to stand up, even against the world, for justice and for the values we believe in

Union Jack

Savenaca Vakaliwaliwa, Samabula

I am convinced after reading Poseci Bune’s opinion on the Union Jack, supporting Dan Urai’s letter that the Union Jack is as relevant today as it was 45 years ago.

The Union Jack should remain as a reminder that it was the British Government who had brought the Indian Indentured labourers to Fiji and now their descendants call Fiji their home and they have become Fijians.Being wise as serpents, having the Union Jack as part of our national flag will be to our advantage as we move forward into a new dawn.
Tailevu Rugby

Tomasi Boginiso, Nasinu

If this is a development side does it always have to stay winless to achieve its goals? Development teams also win.

Where are the colts from last year and the previous years aren’t they our development teams?

Is the the Tailevu Rugby Union functioning?

Is anyone getting sacked for the losing streak?

Where is the pride we are known for?

Where are all the rugby heads of Tailevu?

Whatever happens, I will be always proud to be from Tailevu.

Special Adminstrator

Sukha Singh, Labasa

Simon Hazelman wants a separate “Special Administrator” for Savusavu. I can’t understand the need for a “Special Administrator” for any council when we have a highly paid CEO as well.

When the councils were run by councillors’ we used to have a Town clerk who used to do all administration jobs.

I suppose the town clerk has been made the CEO and the councillors’ job has been taken up by the “special Administrator”.The councillors’ weren’t paid but got some allowances for attending meetings and free grog and tea.

I think it would be better to get the councillors’ and the Town clerk back it would be cheaper in the long run.Even if the Government does not want to bring back the councillors’ just let the town clerk run the council.
OPINION: Promoting Fijian Literary Heritage

Mohammed Habib

Agree with Dr Nandan’s view that a National trust of books and Arts from Fiji must be established.

I would like to initiate the creation of a museum of the sugarcane industry in Lautoka…(near the sugar mill & wharf) where locals and tourists can get a picture of the history of this industry…Some guidance and support will be appreciated from any quarter’s.

Ministry: No To Same Sex Marriage

Saro Namaqa

I myself too dont support same sex marrige..christian country is fiji,we pray goverment, parliment members, country n etc,and why we still in the side@satan to take away some rules which god already ruled us.somtymes satan treat us like a fool or animal,we must cancel that think and stick to that rule;men and women only maried dat wat the bible told us.The purpose of married is get a child not to borrow a child from other people.

Vetaia Kedraika

If people of the same sex wants to live together ,that’s fine it’s their rights .I don’t agree on same sex marriage because at the moment some countries allow them to also adopt children, so where is the children’s right in this decisions, when they get older,am not saying that they can’t raise children properly but there is so much issues. This gay and lesbian movement is going to ask for everything they want because there is so many of them now and they know that during polls every vote counts
