Like most children whose fathers would later this month return home after serving in the Golan Heights, Camari Racolo would have been counting the days to meet her dad.

But last Friday, Republic of Fiji Military Forces Staff Sergeant Penieli Racolo collapsed and died during a fitness test at Camp Ziouani in the Golan Heights.

RFMF Landforce Commander Colonel Sitiveni Qiliho confirmed the incident.

“The medical team that was present immediately attended to him and rushed him to the nearest hospital but was not able to revive him.”

He said the RFMF was shocked and saddened by the late Staff Sergeant’s death.

The late Staff Sergeant Racolo, who was from Natuva Village, Verata in Tailevu, enlisted in the RFMF in 1991. He is a widower.

Colonel Qiliho said he had served in the Multinational Force and Observers, and also in the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq and Timor Leste on a number of occasions. The late Staff Sergeant had nominated his Year Six daughter, Camari, as his next of kin. She resides with an uncle in Suva.

“We will now await the repatriation of his body before the funeral dates are finalised,” Colonel Qiliho said.

The late Mr Racolo was 43 years old.

He was due to return later this month along with close to 300 soldiers on their normal annual rotation.
