Keep Development Apolitical, Says A-G

More than 300 national development plan meetings have been conducted throughout the country in the past 11 days.

This was revealed by Attorney -General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. He was responding to a question by Government member, Viam Pillay on the need for a national development plan and an update on the consultations.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said that development in any country must be dealt with as an apolitical issue because everybody wanted prosperity.

“664 meetings will be held throughout Fiji, 216 meetings will be held in the Central Division, 191 in the Western Division, 108 in the Eastern Division and 148 meetings in the Northern,”Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

Opposition member, Viliame Gavoka suggested the Government was duplicating processes by not utilising the Tikina Councils for gauge feedback from Fijians.

However, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said that the development planning meetings needed to reach the grassroots level.

“It is very critical to have these meetings because are hearing directly from ordinary Fijians as to what they development priorities are, what the everyday issues that affect them are, what they think they want as a development priority in 5 to 10 years time.

“To suggest there is only one source of information would be silly, we are now trying to ascertain and get as much feedback directly from the people, we are getting from Provincial Councils, we are getting from NGO’s, we are getting from other interest groups, we are getting from rule Advisory Councils, everybody is contributing.”

He added that development in any country must be dealt with as an apolitical issue because everybody must want prosperity.
