The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) School of Tourism and Hospitality Management (STHM) has recently been engaged in a grassroot marketing campaign in the Pacific, starting with the Solomon Islands, Kiribati and Vanuatu.

Head of STHM Professor Marcus Stephenson said the campaign had involved school, community and stakeholder visits to explain the work of STHM within the region.

In addition to dealing with core teaching and learning responsibilities at USP campuses, STHM staff have engaged significantly in a wider communication strategy.

The second stage of the process will take place in Semester Two.

Professor Stephenson said, “We now have new programme titles which reflect ‘management’ directly, notably the Bachelor of Commerce in Tourism Management, which is a double major; the Bachelor of Commerce in Tourism and Hospitality Management, the Postgraduate Diploma in Commerce concerning Tourism and Hospitality Management, and importantly our Master of Commerce in Tourism and Hospitality Management.

“Therefore, we are promoting these degrees in the region at grassroots level.

“This is along with our existing Bachelor of Commerce in Hotel Management,” he said.

Their objective is to encourage Pacific Islanders to seriously consider pursuing life-long careers in the service sector, working towards management level positions in the tourism industry.
