Faith Groups Plan

Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Rosy Akbar plans to include faith-based organisations in male advocacy programmes.
She revealed this in Parliament yesterday when responding to a question by Opposition member, Niko Nawaikula.
The Opposition parliamentarian had asked about  extending male advocacy programmes to churches, to help raise awareness about violence against women.
“The main objective of the programme is capacity strengthening through gender sensitisation training of the male members of the Gate Keepers Committees of those communities that have declared themselves violence free after undergoing a 10-phased process of the Zero Tolerance Violence Free Programme,”Ms Akbar said.
She said that addressing Gender Violence required a collaborative between Government, non-government organisations and the communities.
“It creates a need for concerted effort in educating communities, providing them with appropriate information and guidance on all aspects of life thereby, increasing a sense of responsibility among every member of the community, including the women, children, men and youths.
The Minister for Women outlined the number of male advocacy awareness programs that has been conducted so far.
“There’s another training scheduled for the western division from the 27th to 30th July, 2015. We believe that these programs will complement the Ministry’s 10 phase program towards creating violence free communities in Fiji. We intend to take these programs as far as we can to ensure that we expand our reach out to many more communities to combat gender based violence.”
She also extended an invitation to all male parliamentarians to be part of the programme as well.
