The Ben Ryan-coached Fijian National 7s team aims to win gold medal at the 2015 Pacific Games.

The mission starts with Papua New Guinea today.

The side departed yesterday with the second batch of Team Fiji.

The Fijians lost to Samoa in the two previous games 26-19 in Apia 2007 and 21-19 in New Caledonia in 2011.

“Every time we represent the country as the number one team in the world, we need to put in our best performance,” he said

“The Pacific Games has given me an opportunity to rest some players and blend young and senior players.”

He said Samoa, Tonga and PNG would provide tough competition.

“I think PNG is the target as they will try to upset us. This is a good challenge for us as it is strange format with three games on day one and single game against Tahiti on day two.

“I’ve been to other competitions and it is first time for the Pacific Games. It’s nice to be part of the bigger Fijian sporting community and it is a chance to meet with other volunteers in other sports or other athletes and talanoa with.”

Fiji plays PNG at 3:28pm today.
