A taskforce has been formed in the West to help prevent bush, sugarcane farm and pine fires because of the dry spell affecting the division.

Commissioner Western Manasa Tagicakibau who heads the taskforce, urged members of the public to be cautious as fire could damage infrastructure and livelihoods.

“Most water sources in the maritime areas, especially in Yasawa and the Mamanuca Group are drying up and we urge Fijians to refrain from starting bush and sugarcane fires,” he said.

“Bush fires have major implications on water catchment areas and we need forests to be healthy to ensure healthy water levels for all Fijians.”

The taskforce is focused on ensuring minimal disruptions to services, especially water in homes.

Speaking to heads of departments in the division during an emergency meeting yesterday, Mr Tagicakibau said, “Currently 10 districts are being assisted through water carting and this has included 3964 homes and five schools.

“Seventy subsistence farmers have been affected because of dry conditions and low water levels. The agriculture ministry has rotated 70 pumps to various farms to assist farmers.”

The taskforce includes key government agencies like health, education, sugar, agriculture, provincial development, agriculture, women and communication ministries, Police, Water Authority of Fiji (WAF), Fiji Electricity Authority (FEA) and Fiji Metrological Service.
