Fijians In Semifinals

Fiji will inch closer to qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympics when they play Papua New Guinea in the Olympic semifinals qualifier tomorrow.

The Carlos Buzzetti-coached side secured their spot in the Oceania Football Confederation-slated qualifiers after drawing 1-1 with Vanuatu, thrashing Federated States of Micronesia 38-0 and then drawing 0-0 with Tahiti in their final pool match.

PNG sealed their spot in the semi-finals after earning a close 2-1 victory over Solomon Islands and scored their slot despite losing 1-0 to both New Zealand and New Caledonia as the latter was not an Olympic nation thus ineligible for qualification.

The winner of the qualifying round progresses as Oceania’s lone candidate to the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Fiji will play Papua New Guinea in the first Olympic qualifier semi-final at 1pm tomorrow and New Zealand will play Vanuatu in the second Olympic qualifier semifinal at 4.30pm with the final scheduled for Sunday at the Bisini Sports Complex.

Meanwhile, Fiji will play New Caledonia in the Pacific Games semifinal next Wednesday at 1pm followed by the second semi-final between Tahiti and Papua New Guinea at 4.30pm at Bisini Sports Complex.
