Vodafone Flying Fijians Gabiriele Lovobalavu aims to make a positive impact against the Maori All Blacks this Saturday.

The Kanakana, Tunuloa, Cakaudrove native, affectionately known as Gabby, echoed his excitement yesterday after being named to be at second five-eighth for the Vodafone Flying Fijians in the 3pm showdown at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.

“I’m just excited to be back in the group and I’m  looking forward to the big test,” Lovobalavu said,

“I’m delighted to be selected and just wait and see what happens from here on as far as playing in Rugby World Cup is concerned.

“It’s been pretty good. The boys are really excited as it’s a very big game this Saturday that will set the tone for our Pacific Nations Cup and World Cup campaigns.”

The 30-year-old admitted it had been a difficult road recovering from serious injuries that required surgery on his knee to get back on his feet at French Top 14 club, Bayonne.

“After the 2011 World Cup, I had a couple of injuries,” Lovobalavu said.

“Over the following three years I had to have operations on my knee and my arm so it’s been really tough. I had to work my way back up and I did my rehab and I’ve been getting my fitness back.”

The 16-cap centre hailed the competition within the team for a position in the starting line-up.

“It’s a very positive thing I think to have a lot of healthy competition. We have very good, young and experienced players in the team so it’s good for the team. It pushes everyone to work hard and fight for their spot.”

Lovobalavu called on rugby fans to come and support the team this weekend.

Lovobalavu made his debut for the Flying Fijians at the 2007 RWC in France and also featured for the 2011 RWC in New Zealand.
