The Security Council of the government of the Russian Federation hosted the 6th International Meeting of High Ranking Officials Responsible for Security Matters from June 23-26, 2015.

Sixty-five countries were represented by their defence and national security ministers and their senior security officials. A total of 150 delegates attended the meeting.

Fiji was represented by the Timoci Natuva, the Minister for Defence, National Security and Immigration, and his deputy secretary Jonisio Mara.

  • The meeting focused on the following four specific areas:
    International interactions against global terrorism and extremism and its new manifestations;
  • Fresh water as a strategic resource for sustainable development and international security;
  • The role of Russia in the maintenance of biological security at the international level; and
  • The political use of information technologies and the need to establish an international information security system.

Minister Natuva also had bilateral meetings with Nikolai Patruschev, the secretary-general of the Russian Security Council and Mikhail Popov, the deputy secretary-general during the course of the meeting.

Minister Natuva also on June 27, in Moscow, had bilateral meetings with Igor Morgulov, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.

The meetings with Mr Patruschev and Mr Popov focused on security issues while the meeting with Mr Morgulov focused on our military technical co-operation agreement and possible economic, trade, education and security co-operation.

The government of the Russian Federation would like to expand its relations with Fiji.

There is potential to grow Fiji’s relationship with Russia and this will be studied by the Government before proceeding any further.
